Rewarding herbal tea recipes to boost immunity

The listed herbal tea recipes here, have various benefits - they worked like a magic for us. They demonstrate medicinal properties in many ways that help reduce breathing problems, pain, inflammation, allergic reactions and infections and also help with healing.

In Ayurveda, literatures say that herbal remedies benefit our body from the inside similar to what a thermal bath does from the outside. They cleanse the entire system like a detox; they continuously treat the body and give it a balance.

A diet with excellent herbal teas also provides a small quantity of vitamins and minerals to reinforce your body’s defence system for a fast recovery and continued help to prevent further damage during sickness.

We’ve mentioned this before but it’s probably beneficial to mention it here again - include a few beneficial herbal teas in your daily routine to ensure you consume roughly 3 ½ to 4 litres of water (or as ideal for your bodyweight) in various forms throughout the day.

Restoration post COVID-19: getting healthy again

The most common recovery time tends to range from 2 weeks to 4 weeks and in some severe cases may take up to 6 weeks, while in milder cases, there are chances of no symptoms or mild symptoms for just a day or two.

To have a steady recovery immediately after an illness, a regime can be followed that should include:

  • A healthy diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Good sleep
  • Avoidance of stress and negative thoughts

These are all covered in the earlier sections of the blog.

Example - nutritive value of herbs & spices

Here’s an example of what a chart featuring nutritive values of foods looks like. Many of our readers would know where to find these. What we share here covers many of the ingredients that we’ve used in the recipes and remedies shared in this blog. Such information along with the understanding of the dietary requirements can help an individual plan a balanced diet that adds to the final intake during a day being wholesome and healthy.

COVID-19 preparedness: what’s on my kitchen shelf?

Across the globe most of the condiments and spices are mainly used in small quantities to enhance the flavour, aroma and taste of food. The word ‘spices’ originated from the word ‘species’ which was applied to a group of exotic foodstuffs which were mainly used to flavour food, and valued for their special aroma or colour, or rich essential oils that are made available in the bottled form as aromatic/essential oils.

Some of these condiments and spices are a source of minerals and vitamins and some are found to have medicinal properties. Our recipes in the previous sections utilise both – nourishment and medicinal properties - of the ingredients.

Apart from that, the recipes are also mindful of certain other details. For example:

  •     The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. Piperine is an ingredient present in black pepper. Where we suggest the use of turmeric, we also suggest to add black pepper (that has other medicinal properties too), because piperine helps the digestive system easily absorb curcumin, strengthening the effect of turmeric.

Recommended daily practices for COVID-19 prevention & cure

Here, we share what we find most valuable as routine practices. We combine the information already shared in this blog and add more points emphasised time and time again by experts and government authorities. These should serve as a ready reference for anyone who wishes to be more active in minimizing the effect of COVID-19 beyond just the obvious points of social distancing and wearing masks when in public.

Hygiene and sanitation

  •     Personal hygiene – Washing hands with soap or using sanitizers frequently or after being exposed to new/external surroundings is most important.
  •     Maintain the recommended social distance and while quarantined at home, do not step outdoors.
  •     When unwell, keep your personal belongings away from others, confined to your room (also away from your own children) i.e. mobile phone, water glass, water bottle, used cups, plates and glasses, used linen (towel, bed sheet, pillow, etc.).
  •      A daily shower is great even when unwell – in our case, we noticed that a hot shower helps the body relax feel relieved of pain and sickness.
  •     Use a separate dustbin with a disposable cover to dispose the used and soiled face mask, toilet tissues, hand tissues, sanitary napkins etc.
  •      Observe hygiene and personal etiquettes while coughing, sneezing or blowing the nose.
  •      When unwell, avoid moving around in your house unless necessary; stay confined to a room.

Covid-19: our symptoms and routines

We have mentioned most of the symptoms and routines in the case studies before but it’s good to stress upon them again in a more specific manner that can be useful to readers. The symptoms are varying from patient to patient and as experts understand this better, more updates are released. This is the reason we here avoid sharing a general information on it, which may get outdated by the time this blog is being read.

  •          The first symptoms of COVID-19 for us were dry cough on the first day followed by fever from the second day.

This dry cough was not very similar to the usual cough that we experience with influenza as we experienced no excess mucus or running nose.

  •          Cough got severe at nights and this disturbed the sleep
  •          This was followed by low fever in the day and higher during nights
  •          We felt a loss in sense of smell that lasted long

COVID-19: case studies that helped us understand it

This is a detailed examination of three cases in the age bracket of 50 to 85 years.

The two couples were positive with COVID-19 around the same time.

Case study 1 & 2

True Story 1

Male – 85 years

Female – 68 years

Place – Gurugram, Haryana, India

Narrated by a student of the author (names not disclosed)

“I had to post this. It might help some people in making the right decision. My mom and dad both tested positive for COVID and as they are old 68 and 85yrs old decided to get themselves admitted in the hospital just to be on the safer side as other people in the house don’t get infected and in-case of an emergency they would get immediate attention. So they got themselves admitted to a hospital in a normal ward on 15th June. On 17th night dads oxygen level was between 88 and 92 so they shifted him to ICU but still on oxygen bottle. Next day the doctor advised us to shift him to a better hospital for better care.

COVID-19: anxiety and fear & the need for self-control

The COVID-19 disease caused a lot of havoc throughout the world. It has caused severe damage to people, disrupting their routine work and lifestyle which at times leads to severe anxiety and fear.

A lot of people lost their jobs, several others lost family members who died of the dreadful disease and this happened almost everywhere across the globe. The sudden onset of the virus affected even children’s routines disrupting their regular schooling and education. The virus still continues to cause strong emotional problems among young adults and the aged.

Businesses - small to large – have been put through tough times too, except some which have been able to capitalise on the pandemic in some ways. Many businesses have had to even file for bankruptcy.

The fear and anxiousness caused by the pandemic directly and indirectly, may last for months until we get back to what life once was or learn to adapt to what it might be.

The need to increase mental control

Coping with stress and anxiety is very essential to lead a healthy life. Stress and anxiety even cause lowered immune strength and to make matters worse, the COVID-19 disease is also in many patients, causing added symptoms of confusion and other brain symptoms that are linked to lowered blood oxygen levels. All these together add to a strong hit to the immune response of a body.

Hence, learning to manage stress, fear, anxiety and confusion, to any extent, shall be of a great help. Experts from various fields would call this practice mental control, self-control, mastering the mind and so on. No matter what the label is, it is a beneficial practice to learn.

Right nutrition & it's importance for COVID-19 prevention & cure

Many viral infections tend to be contagious and COVID-19 is proving to be very highly contagious. The main concern addressed in this eBook is focused on the frequently overlooked topic of food intake and herbal remedies. Ample of emphasis is shared world-over for the need of safe hygiene practices so we shall avoid getting deep into it. However, that doesn’t in any way mean that it is less important. Social distancing and personal hygiene are proving to be very crucial in slowing down the spread of this disease.

By now, perhaps all individuals who read this eBook, would know that the SARS-CoV2 virus can survive for several hours on objects touched by the carrier like doorknobs, telephones, switches etc., hence it is strongly advisable to wash / sanitise your hands as often as possible.

The chances of infections are heightened when we are under stress, weak in immunity, exhausted, or are recovering from some other chronic illnesses.

However, the much overlooked role of nutrition can help strike the right balance in the fight against disease and this shall be the first thing we cover in this eBook. Understanding nutrition and its role gives access to a tool that can be used not just to prevent and fight this disease but many others too.

Nutrition & food vs. supplementation

To maintain a normal healthy immune defence system, most doctors, health advisory boards and nutritionists have been reminding the public to boost their immunity system and have advised people to take a daily dose of Vitamin Supplements like Vitamin C, Vitamin D3, Zinc and B-Complex, which are listed among the over-the-counter drugs obtainable without a prescription – in many parts of the world, these can also be easily bought online.

Introduction: understanding this COVID-19 Remedy Blog

Herbal and natural home remedies can be a great tool given that these mainly comprise of simple natural foods and practices that are easily manageable and usually affordable, yet are proven to be very effective and free from most or all of the side-effects that typical medications may induce. Like any other form of medication, they come with limitations too, but the benefits of such remedies can easily outweigh these limitations and this is slowly being reflected in the recent growth of functional medicine, Ayurveda, fitness trends and nutrition studies.

We combined some traits of these in our fight against the COVID-19 disease and in a continuing effort to reduce susceptibility from the effects of future infection from the SARS-CoV2. We believe our remedies worked and are working great for us, and hence wish to share it with whoever chooses to read this eBook. Given the nature of these remedies, it is fairly safe to say that as long as a person is aware of their allergies and tolerances, it should be beneficial to follow some or all of the remedies shared in this eBook – some for a daily routine and some for symptomatic treatment if affected. We strongly recommend reading through the Preface of this eBook before going ahead, if you have not already done so.

As you read this eBook, you shall see that many remedies shared here are not just beneficial in managing immunity and conditions with relation to the SARS-CoV2 infection but are also useful in treating many other conditions and illnesses and are generally good health practices anyways.

How to use this eBook

With a simple and straight forward approach, this is a self-explanatory eBook. It teaches and trains the reader to understand the properties and uses of various ingredients like herbs, spices, seeds and flowers available to us on our kitchen shelf. To add to this, the eBook recalls the importance of a balanced diet, hydration and fitness too.

The small alphabets and numbers which are written within a bracket like for example (a), (1) are the in-text referencing and citations to assist the reader with cross references where required.

Some facts about food and health

The phrase “you are what you eat” (a) is very aptly said, which means that it is important to eat good food in order to be healthy and fit. Our home kitchens can provide us many ingredients which can help us boost our immunity. Viruses have plenty in common though they may show different ‘onset’ symptoms - some may seem less harmful like the influenza that is a cause of a seasonal flu, but if you are not guarded when attacked by even such a virus, the suffering could be fatal and there are a significant number of people who die of the flu across the globe each year.

The knowledge and learning derived from this eBook is for a lifetime. You could make your own notes to go back and refer. You will be able to create your own recipes as per your body’s defence mechanism.

We are delighted to provide a handful of tried and tested recipes which have unique benefits to fight many an ailments like common colds, coughs, headaches and more.

This eBook also includes special herbal tea recipes to boost one’s immunity to suppress and prevent SARS-CoV2 virus infections.

How does a healthy body fight the SARS-CoV2?

The body is fighting against multiple things when affected by the SARS-CoV2. These are:

  •          The virus itself
  •          Bacterial growth that the virus may open a window to
  •          Symptomatic discomforts and complications that could be caused by COVID-19, e.g. body ache, dry cough, pneumonia, low blood oxygen saturation, etc.

Understanding this, helps prevent and manage the disease well.

Attacking the virus

The body uses antibodies to attack the virus. These anti bodies are basically multiple forms of proteins, which simply goes to say that high quality, complete protein intake is essential.

In the absence of antibodies, or the inability of the body to produce antibodies, it is likely for medical practitioners to employ plasma therapy for COVID-19 treatment.

It is essential to ensure a good protein and vitamin B intake on a daily basis, to keep the body’s immune system working well. Many other components of a balanced diet add to further strengthening immunity, and many topics ahead shall address these.

Arresting bacterial growth

A lot of common kitchen ingredients have strong anti-bacterial properties. These are discussed in the topics ahead.

Symptomatic treatment

Foods and the right amount of hydration seem to play a great role in combatting most symptoms of the COVID-19. Different recipes and ingredients discussed ahead have benefits that help fight different symptoms and having an understanding of these can help manage the disease well.

Why are herbal home remedies a preferred choice?

Almost every drug or medicine we consume show side effects, causing either long term or short term damage to the body. On the contrary, home remedies taken in the right way, do not cause most such side effects apart from allergic reactions (which tend to be known to many individuals) - they are natural and can be used as a strong defence against viruses.

As we all know by now, COVID-19 is a highly contagious virus which spreads very rapidly unlike most other known viruses. At the time of the writing of this eBook, COVID-19 has no exclusively prescribed, dedicated treatment to cure it and a vaccine is much awaited.

The onset symptoms appear to be similar in some ways to getting a common cold, cough or flu but a lot is different too. One of the best ways to stay safe is to be prepared, to be alert and continue a balance of preventive, protective and remedial measures, using the right ones at the right time.

Preface: Nutritionist shares COVID-19 Natural Remedies

Our Herbal Home Remedies for COVID-19

Months of being the biggest thing in the news, at the time of the writing of this eBook, the COVID-19 pandemic is still an unsurmounted concern for most people. Having emerged victorious through a strong battle with the virus and having fought many other health problems using nothing more than home remedies, we are a family that tends to prefer a healthy lifestyle, natural remedies and functional medicine over most other forms of medicine in most situations. Nonetheless, we appreciate and understand the role of science and modern medicine and do not in any way discourage the use of that where needed.

That being said, there are a whole host of solutions that nature and a good diet plan have, to offer to us. Modern science too, supports that many/most illnesses and their symptoms can be either weakened or completely treated by the use of natural remedies and here in this eBook, we share what we used, in order to manage our illness and thereafter to support recovery, strengthen healing and then increase our immune system’s resilience, which we believe should be helping us stay more protected in the future against this disease and many others.

We must share that there is no scientific evidence that our remedies are helping us stay protected from the COVID-19 disease, however what we know is that we feel healthier and it is very likely that our immune response is strengthened by the remedies, since the time that we adopted them. And, having a strong background in nutrition, diet and food, we understand that these remedies pose no significant harm and are simply daily foods that many people already consume – just not in a calculated and disciplined pattern of consumption.

In this eBook, we share all the home remedies we used and these remedies have many health benefits and medicinal uses which can help manage many medical conditions and lifestyle diseases. We try to be as elaborate and complete as we can so that the readers benefit with not only being able to manage one but many illnesses. Moreover, we share all links and information available with us, with the idea that some readers who choose to dig deeper into functional medicine and home remedies, can continue to study further using the links and finding more information that can help understand and find great alternative ways to stay healthy and treat many conditions and illnesses.

About the eBook

We have made efforts to make this eBook and our remedies shared here, usable by a broad set of people. The COVID-19 disease is already known to result in vastly varying symptoms and extent of impact on various individuals. In our own family with three members in the house, one had no signs of being symptomatic, one being diabetic had to experience a strong battle and the third experienced two battles in a row of which the second also featured pneumonia. In all cases, a single advice by a doctor over the phone, helped us understand how to know what “critical” would be, and the more important part of the advice was that unless critical, heading to a hospital was not ideal because in the then current situation, a hospital bed even in emergency, would’ve needed 3-6 hours of waiting in a line and deteriorating further.

That advice was received while pneumonia was going strong, causing breathing problems, but motivated care and support through strong and safe natural remedies, simply turned the battle to our favour and soon, the body’s immune system overpowered the disease with that little, calculated help.

What we know and feel proud to share is that all throughout the ordeal, our faith and belief that we can fight the disease, was strong within us. Together, we planned our day and made what can be described as a new schedule to fight this virus.

Being people with a food and nutrition background, our priority soon was to use what we had in our kitchen - “food is thy medicine” has perhaps been taken for granted, like many of us take our body for granted. What we eat, can help us manage and recover from many illnesses and conditions, and it also affects our day-to-day health; paying less attention to consuming natural, balanced and wholesome food for long periods of time is likely to lead to lowered immunity and several lifestyle diseases like hypertension, diabetes, etc.

A modern lifestyle with increased dependency on processed foods and laboratory-created chemical medicines/drugs is shown by many researches, to be an easy way to fall sick and get affected harder by any disease and the COVID-19 is no exception. A good immune system is well equipped to – in most cases – win the battle against the SARS-CoV2 that causes this disease. However the modern times tend to make us a little too dependent on pills, refined and processed food products that miss the natural fibres and wholesomeness of natural foods, and a lot of other less ideal routines and foods. This is a lifestyle that might now need a reconsideration. We do regret knowing that a lot of very knowledgeable medical practitioners and health specialists happen to overlook the importance of natural, balanced and wholesome food and this is why we felt the need to write this eBook, now.

We admire that off-late, some medical practitioners, nutritionists and local government health centres are starting to advise people to keep fit, boost immunity and keep healthy while staying at home – as the pandemic gains momentum (at the time of the writing of this eBook). However, this is only a new trend and with limited commercial agenda, the prominence it can reach is limited. As you read ahead, we share what we found to be most important for a healthy lifestyle that can help prevent and fight the COVID-19. We skip the more talked about hygiene and social distancing topics and restrict this eBook to food intake and some other remedies, with special emphasis on healing herbal remedies.

Why choose this eBook?

There’s a whole lot of information out there – eBooks, news articles, online videos and a lot more. What I personally found missing was someone from the food, nutrition and hospitality industry sharing the right facts about healing food remedies and immunity boosting foods that can actually be easily consumed without too much effort. Then there are suggestions of food items, but not clear-cut guidelines on when, why and how to use them. We address all this and present you with a concise eBook with exactly what we believe you shall need:

  1.       A few case studies and a true story of a couple who had contracted with the virus and how they successfully fought their way back to healthy lifestyle
  2.       A series of rewarding & healing herbal recipes to keep your immunity levels high
  3.       Herbal tea recipes that boost immunity and restore and rejuvenate the body to keep you fresh and active all day
  4.       Recipes to ensure that you will be benefited with several rich minerals and vitamins added without much fuss to your diet
  5.       The eBook provides some nutritive values table as a guide to the reader, to get started with looking at what’s important
  6.       This eBook also discusses some of the necessary home care required while dealing with the COVID-19 virus, which we found to be often overlooked
  7.       This eBook can serve as a new hope to every individual who has faith and determination to fight the disease at comfort of their home, and shares references to every external resource we used, for you to be able to learn further if you’d like to
  8.       Functional medicine and Ayurveda are slowly gaining trust and importance as a safe alternate to many drugs and our eBook combines the goodness from many ingredients that have been used a lot by practitioners of both Functional Medicine and the Ayurveda.

Nutrition is a young science which revolves around the kitchen. It is a powerhouse that can help prevent and fight simpler ailments such as colds, coughs, flu and tougher diseases like hypertension, diabetes, cancer etc.

Food science has seen many studies of food materials which facilitate in building better immunity for a healthy lifestyle. This is a gift from nature which many have completely ignored or developed an ignorance to and reach out to food only to curb the hunger pangs.

Through this eBook, I would like to reach out to every corner of the world. I wish and hope to benefit mankind and help every individual look at their kitchen gardens and kitchen cupboards with a new approach and pose a strong fight to lifestyle diseases and COVID-19.
